Education 學歷

Thanks to the Fraser's Government

I was born in Hong Kong, and would never have dreamt of studying abroad. Fortunately in the 70's, for some unknown reasons, Hong Kong was considered an "under-developed country" by the Aussie Government. Australia became the paradise for many underprivelged students like me. Any students can apply for high schools, as long as their acaedmic results meet the requirements. I remember I paid only HKD 50 to hire all the textbooks for Year 12, and nothing for attending high school and University. Overseas students are free to work to support themselves.

Thanks, Malcolm Fraser!

Job 職位

I would have been a Missile Engineer and a Killer

Honestly speaking, when I was young, I've never thought of being a doctor. After reading the humiliating history of the Ching Dynasty and modern China, I wanted to make nuclear missiles to increase the military power and dignity of mother China. So my original plan was to study Aeronauctical Engineering in Australia.

I changed my mind after my best friend asked me, "why you want to devote your life in killing people, instead of saving them.' At the end I followed her advice and apply for medical school. So instead of a mass killer, I become a doctor. For the last 35 years I have been working in New Zealand, Australia, Thailand, and Hong Kong.

Award 獎狀

Non-quotable Qualifications

Despite the fact that I have spent one year attending the ISHRS Fellowship Training Program, performing over 500 of cases, and transplanting more than 2 million hair follicles, my qualifications were not recognized by the Hong Kong Medical Council. I list the following awards not to boost how good I am, just to prove you that I take hair transplant very seriously. It is a surgical procedure afterall.

Hair Transplant

FISHRS - Fellow of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery

In 2012, the designation of Fellow was established in order to recognize members who met its exceptional educational criteria. In order to be considered, the hair restoration surgeon must achieve a specific level of points in a system of various educational parameters such as serving in leadership positions, American Board of Hair Restoration (ABHRS) certification, writing of scientific papers, teaching at scientific programs, among others.
It is a great honor for a member to achieve the Fellow designation of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (FISHRS). This recognizes the surgeon who strives for excellence in this specialized field. To maintain this status, the surgeon must continue to meet established educational criteria over time. Read More

ISHRS Fellowship Training Program

The purpose of the Fellowship Training Program is to assist the Fellow in developing the medical and surgical skills necessary to practice aesthetically sound, safe hair restoration surgery. The Program ensures they are properly trained by appointed directors to acquire expertise in hair restoration surgery, and to become proficient in the scientific skills necessary to develop study protocols so as to contribute sound research to the knowledge about hair loss and restoration, with the communication skills necessary to contribute to the body of hair restoration literature.
Fellowships may be one year in duration. The minimum caseload requirement is to perform at least 70 cases. ISHRS will issue to the trainee a certificate upon successful completion of the program. Read More

Diplomate, The American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery

The ABHRS is internationally recognized as the only board certification focusing on hair restoration surgery for physicians worldwide. The ABHRS is also the only certification recognized by the ISHRS, the largest hair restoration educational organization in the world. Certification of a Diplomate requires demonstration of training, evidence of post-training experience, and successful completion of Written and Oral Examinations on the entire scope of the specialty. Once recognizes, the ABHRS would verify to the general public that the Diplomate has the ability to practise safe and aesthetically sensitive hair restoration surgery. Read More

Recognition as World Class Hair Transplant Surgeon

During the 2018 Beijing Meeting, the Chinese Association of Hair Restoration Surgery collected my hand-print. This is a great honor as my hand-print will be displayed in the Chinese Hair Transplant Museum, being next to those of Dr Rassman, Dr Unger, Dr Marzola, Dr Pathomvanich, Dr Sheil, Dr Knudsen and other world class Hair Transplant Surgeon.

Tattoo Art

Certificate, Tattoo School of Thailand

Tattoos is a form of body art. The most common method in modern times is the electric tattoo machine, which inserts ink into the skin via a single needle or a group of needles that are soldered onto a bar, which is attached to an oscillating unit. The unit rapidly and repeatedly drives the needles in and out of the skin, usually 80 to 150 times a second. I wanted to acquire the fundamental skill of tattooing as this body art has been applied in medial aesthetic, including Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP). I worked in a tattoo parlour for 2 weeks as an apprentice to earn this certificate.

SKILL 技術

Learn from the Experts

Hair transplant is a very delicate surgical procedure. Every little step affects the final outcome. For the last 10 years I was lucky to have experts from all over thw world sharing their experience with me. I cannot remember how many countries I have travelled, in order to learn their personal techniques. Here I would like to express my deepest gratitude.

FUE

Dr Andrea Tchalakov

London, United Kingdom
The Harley Street Hair Clinic

I first met Dr Tchalakov in 2006. She is my first "teacher" when I was sent for training in the DHI Headquarter in Lavrio (Greece). She taught me the basic skill in manual FUE. Dr Tchalakov has well established her reputation in London.

Dr Andrea Tchalakov

Dr Roland Keleman

Piešťany, Slovkia
Folliclinic

I met Dr Keleman in 2006 when he was working in Greece. We both stayed in the same boarding house. Every evening he shared with me his experience in performing manual FUE, and helped me with my first hair transplant case.

Dr Roland Keleman

Dr Jose Lorenzo

Mydrad, Spain
Intercapillar Clinic

Dr Lorenzo is the founder of the World FUE Institute. He invited me to his office in Spain in 2009, and showed me how to extract grafts with minimal transection. I still consider him one the best FUE surgeons in the world.

Dr Jose Lorenzo

Dr James Harris

Hair Sciences Center of Colorado
Colorado, USA

In 2012, I replaced manual FUE by Dr Harris S.A.F.E. System. His machine assisted FUE making use of a dull punch for deep excision to minimize graft damage. It was my work horse until 2016 when I developed my own FUE punch.

Dr James Harris

FUT

Dr Damkerng Pathomvanich

DHT Clinic
Bangkok Thailand

In 2008 I trained with Dr Damkerng for one year. This ISHRS Fellowship Training Program taught me everything about FUT. I have been using his "Open Technique" and "Retention Suture" for the last 10 years with excellent result.

Dr Damkerng Pathomvanich

Dr Wu Wen-Yi

I first met Dr Wu in ISHRS Asian Workshop in Yokohama. We have become best friends ever since, attending conferences altogether and learning from each other. I regard him as the best hair transplant surgeon in Taiwan.

Dr Wu Wen-Yi

Dr Mario Marzola

Norwood Day Surgery
Adelaide, Australia

I love to see Dr Marzola in meetings as this Aussie has a great sense of humor. He introduced Trichophytic Closure in 2005 which greatly reduced the FUT donor scar. His technique is still in used all over the world.

Dr Mario Marzola

Dr John Schwinning

Retired
Las Vagas, USA

Dr Schwinning and his wife Angela visit my office everytime when in Hong Kong, to share with us their over 30 years of experience in hair transplant. They even train our staff in graft insertion. Good to see them happily retired.

Dr John Schwinning

Dr Jerry Wong

Hassan & Wong Hair Transplant
Vancouver, Canada

I have known Dr Wong, the world famous Hair Surgeon, for over 10 years. In 2010 he visited my office and shared with us his technique in gigasession when up to 5,000 grafts can be transplanted just in one session.

Dr Jerry Wong

SMP

Dr William Rassman

New Hair Institute

Dr Rassman is the most respected amongst all, being the "Father" of FUE and SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation). SMP has helped a lot of people to look good again even though they are not good candidates for hair transplant.

Dr William Rassman

Laser Hair Therapy

Dr Shelly Friedman

Arizona, USA

Dr Friedman is the Founding President of American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery. He has been very generous with his time and knowledge, welcoming me to his office to train me in using low level laser to treat hair loss.

Dr Shelly Friedman

PRP

Dr Fabio Rinaldi

Studio Rinaldi
Milan, Italy

In 2014 I visit Dr Rinaldi's studio in Milan, Italy. He is an expert in using platelet rich plasma (PRP) to reverse hair loss in both men & women. During my stay he showed me his excellent result, then how to prepare and inject PRP.

Dr Fabio Rinaldi

Achievement 貢獻

The World Knows Me

Hair Transplant is not recognized as a sub-specialty in Hong Kong. There is no such training, accreditation, medical organisation, nor governing board. My reputation lies outside Hong Kong. My service has been sought and valued by many international medical bodies. It is sad to say I establish Hong Kong as leader in Hair Transplant without any local credit. Even calling myself a "Hair Transplant Surgeon" will face prosecution by the Hong Kong Medical Council. To me, a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

Invention / Research

Minimal Graft Transection

My FUE Punch

Graft transection used to be the main drawback with FUE when using the 1st generation sharp punch. The 2nd generation dull punch developed by Dr Harris reduces transection, but the extraction rate is slow. In 2016 I have developed the 3rd generation FUE punch. The wide mouth and narrow stem reduce graft damage without affecting the extraction speed.

My FUE Punch
Handheld Laser Device

Rapid Hairline Design

Hairline placement is important, but proper hairline placement is very time consuming.
In 2008 I invented a device, utilizes laser technology for precision, which revolutionalizes hairline placement. Symmetry can be achieved just in split second. This has been published in numerous textbooks and used by hair transplant surgeon all over the world.

Handheld Laser Device Prototype
Adipose Derived Stem Cells in Hair Loss

Stem Cell Therapy

Abdominal fat extracted stem cells have been successfully used in treating diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke. Their use in hair loss was reported by a Korea doctor. Success was claimed in over thirty cases of thinning hair. In 2008-09 I joined an international research team, sponsored by an Australian Pharmaceutical Company, to examine its efficacy.

Adipose Derived Stem Cells in Hair Loss
Donor Hair Loss After Hair Transplant

Anagen or Telogen?

There was no consensus whether hair loss in the donor areas after hair transplant surgery is telogen, anagen or a combination of both. Such hair loss is troublesome complication to patients. In order to find a preventive measure, the underlying aetology must be known. In 2008, my research concluded that this is a form of anagen effluvium.

Donor Hair Loss After Hair Transplant
Application of Hair Follicle Transplant

Vitiligo Re-Pigmentation

My case study in 2000 revealed that transfer of melanocytes by follicular unit grafting can return color to localized vitiligo. Scalp hair with normal color was transplanted. My graft contained the middle 1/3 of the hair follicle as it contains the maximum amount of outer root sheath melanocytes. The procedure is simple and easily performed.
